John A. Rettzo

December 27, 1955 - November 2, 2021

John Anthony Rettzo, 65, of Hazleton passed away unexpectedly Nov. 2 in Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, due to complications from lung cancer. His family and friends were deeply saddened by the sudden loss.

John was born in Mahanoy City, Dec. 27, 1955, to Theresa Fronczek Agresta, formerly of Mahanoy City, and currently of Hazleton, and the late Joseph Rettzo. John attended grades kindergarten through 11 in the Mahanoy Area School District and went on to graduate from Hazleton High School, Class of 1973. After high school, John studied pipefitting, plumbing and both technical and mechanical engineering, ultimately finishing out his career in environmental engineering. John's schooling enabled him to work on a commercial level throughout the United States and Canada, which John enjoyed, as he was fond of traveling and new experiences.

John belonged to many groups pertaining to his field, including the Plumbers and Pipefitting Union No. 524. He was a social member of the McAdoo Fire Co. He also volunteered his skills at his church by assisting with renovations and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone it need.

He is survived by his mother, Theresa; his brother, Ronald Rettzo Sr.; his sister, Danielle Agresta; his stepfather, Daniel Agresta, all of Hazleton; and his aunt, Florence.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Roxanne Marie Garcia, Hazleton, who also passed away from complications relating to cancer earlier this year.

John was a philanthropist for anything animal related and gave much of his time and resources to numerous animal charities. He was well-known at the Hazleton Animal Shelter for volunteering or offering aid throughout his years. John especially had a love for dogs in which he was known for rescuing and helping. He always had a dog by his side.

John's last wishes were to have his love and support for animals carry on after his passing. This request will be fulfilled by his sister, Danielle, who also shares the same passion for animals. In conjunction with local shelters for victims of domestic violence and resources provided from John's estate, Danielle is in the beginning stage of developing a program and/or sanctuary for the pets of those who need to retreat to the safety of a shelter but can not bring their pet. This nonprofit will offer assurance and comfort to victims that their pets are safe rather than leaving their beloved friends behind to potentially suffer more abuse, neglect or worse. In honor of John's wishes, this will support animals in need of a safe place through housing them temporarily or otherwise. This was very important to him.

Private final arrangements were handled by Fierro Funeral Home, Hazleton.

A Mass at our Lady Of Grace Church was held in honor of John.
