Stephen M. "Steve" Lazar

February 12, 1955 ~ November 28, 2024 (age 69)

Stephen M. "Steve" Lazar, 69, of Briar Creek Township,  died early Thursday morning, November 28th, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

Born February 12, 1955 in  Hazleton, he was a son of Lillian (Suchajda) Lazar, of Berwick and the late Stephen J. Lazar.  He and his wife, Terrell "Terri" (Johnson) Lazar celebrated their 38th wedding anniversary on August 1st.

Steve was a graduate of Hazleton Senior High School and furthered his education  at Millersville University, where he earned his B. S. and Master's degrees.  He taught Industrial Arts at Berwick Middle School for 35 years, retiring in 2013.  He was known to have positively impacted many students lives throughout his teaching career.

He loved basketball,  having played for Hazleton High School and Kutztown University.  He also was a long time referee and basketball coach.  His other passion in life was woodworking; he was a talented woodworker and made many cabinets and furniture pieces over the years.  Other hobbies  included hunting and fishing, but his biggest joy was spending time with his beloved family.

Steve was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Berwick.  An avid sportsman, he was also a member of the North Berwick Hunting and Fishing Club.  

Surviving, in addition to his mother, Lillian, and his wife, Terri, are his three sons:  Jamison E. Kelsey, of Berwick; Stephen C. Lazar and his wife, Megan, of Nescopeck; Zachary A. Lazar and his wife, Megan, of Berwick; five grandchildren:  Keaton, Garrett, Colton, Michael and Andrew; and a sister, Mary Lou Parsons, of Linglestown, PA.

Along with his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Amber L. Lazar on May 24, 1989.

A private Viewing and Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 721 Monroe Street, Berwick, with Father William T. Barbee, his pastor, as Celebrant.  Burial  will be in St. James Cemetery, Stillwater (Fishing Creek Township).  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in  his memory to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN   38105-9959.
